How to use the ASCII to HEX converter

  1. Select Text to HEX to encode text as hexadecimal bytes.
  2. Enter or paste your text in the input box.
  3. The result updates automatically. You can also click Convert.
  4. Click Copy Result to copy the output.
  5. Select HEX to Text to decode hexadecimal byte values back into text.

Hexadecimal input can contain spaces or line breaks between bytes. Each byte must contain exactly two hexadecimal digits.

What is hexadecimal encoding?

Hexadecimal, commonly called hex, is a base-16 number system that uses the digits 0–9 and letters A–F. Each hexadecimal digit represents four bits. Two hexadecimal digits therefore represent one byte, or eight bits.

Computers store text as bytes according to a character encoding. ASCII defines values for 128 characters, including English letters, numbers, punctuation and control characters. UTF-8 preserves the ASCII byte values for those characters and also encodes characters from many other writing systems using multiple bytes.

For example, the ASCII character A has decimal value 65, binary value 01000001, and hexadecimal value 41. The word Hello becomes 48 65 6C 6C 6F when encoded as UTF-8.

Hexadecimal is commonly used when debugging software, inspecting network data, analyzing file contents, reading memory dumps, and working with protocols or embedded systems.

ASCII versus UTF-8

ASCII represents 128 defined character values. UTF-8 is a Unicode encoding that uses one to four bytes per Unicode code point. ASCII characters use the same single-byte values in both encodings.

This converter uses UTF-8 for text input. For characters outside the ASCII range, the result may contain multiple bytes. For example, the character é is encoded in UTF-8 as C3 A9, while its representation in other character encodings may differ.

If you need to inspect individual character values, use an ASCII table. If you need to convert between binary, decimal and hexadecimal number representations, use a number base converter.
