What Is UTF-8 to Binary Conversion?

UTF-8 is a Unicode encoding format that represents text as a sequence of bytes. Binary is a base-2 number system that uses only the digits 0 and 1. A UTF-8 to binary converter encodes text into UTF-8 bytes and writes each byte as an eight-bit binary value.

The distinction matters because a Unicode character does not always correspond to a single byte. Basic English characters such as A use one UTF-8 byte, while many other characters need two, three or four bytes. Each byte is represented by exactly eight binary digits. See the Unicode Standard for the encoding rules.

How to Convert Text to Binary

  1. Enter the text you want to encode.
  2. The converter encodes the text as UTF-8.
  3. Each UTF-8 byte is converted into an eight-digit binary number.
  4. The converter displays the binary output, hexadecimal bytes and Unicode code points.
  5. Copy the output or print the results for later use.

UTF-8 to Binary Examples

For a basic ASCII character, the conversion is straightforward:

Character Unicode code point UTF-8 hex Binary
A U+0041 41 01000001
1 U+0031 31 00110001
é U+00E9 C3 A9 11000011 10101001
€ U+20AC E2 82 AC 11100010 10000010 10101100
Remember: UTF-8 binary output represents the encoded bytes, not simply the Unicode code point written in binary. For example, the character é has code point U+00E9, but its UTF-8 byte sequence is C3 A9.

UTF-8 Byte Length and Binary Output

UTF-8 uses a variable number of bytes per Unicode code point:

  • U+0000 to U+007F: one byte.
  • U+0080 to U+07FF: two bytes.
  • U+0800 to U+FFFF, excluding surrogate code points: three bytes.
  • U+10000 to U+10FFFF: four bytes.

These ranges describe Unicode code points, not necessarily the number of user-perceived characters in a word. For instance, some displayed letters combine a base character with a separate accent mark.

UTF-8 Binary Converter Features

  • Converts text into actual UTF-8 bytes represented as binary.
  • Supports international text, punctuation, whitespace and emoji.
  • Shows binary and hexadecimal representations of the same bytes.
  • Displays Unicode code points and per-character byte details.
  • Provides copy controls for the binary output and conversion details.
  • Runs locally in your browser without submitting your text to the PHP page.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a UTF-8 to binary converter?

It encodes text using UTF-8 and displays every resulting byte as an eight-bit binary number. This lets you inspect how text is represented digitally.

2. Does each character always equal eight binary digits?

No. Each UTF-8 byte contains eight bits, but a Unicode code point can require one to four bytes. Therefore, its binary representation can contain 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits.

3. Can I convert emoji and non-English text?

Yes. The converter uses the browser's UTF-8 encoder and supports Unicode text, including emoji, accented letters and many writing systems.

4. What is the difference between binary and hexadecimal output?

Binary uses base 2, with digits 0 and 1. Hexadecimal uses base 16, with digits 0–9 and A–F. Both outputs in this tool represent the same UTF-8 bytes in different number systems.

5. Are spaces and line breaks included?

Yes. Spaces, punctuation, tabs and line breaks are part of the input and are included in the conversion. Line breaks may not be visually obvious in a binary string, but their bytes are included.

6. Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion is performed by JavaScript in your browser. The converter does not submit your entered text to this PHP page.
