Byte Parity Generator
Generate an even or odd parity bit for an 8-bit byte. Enter data in binary, decimal, or hexadecimal format, inspect the number of set bits, and produce a parity-protected word for digital logic, communications, and computer science exercises.
Generate a Byte Parity Bit
Enter one byte or multiple byte values. Each value is processed independently and padded to eight bits where appropriate.

How Byte Parity Works
A parity bit is an extra bit added to data to provide a basic check
for transmission or storage errors. The bit is selected according
to how many 1 bits appear in the original data. With
even parity, the complete word must contain an even number of ones;
with odd parity, it must contain an odd number.
| Data byte | Number of 1s | Even parity bit | Odd parity bit |
|---|---|---|---|
00000000 |
0 | 0 |

4 | 0 |

Parity formulas
Let n be the number of ones in the data byte.
The even parity bit is n mod 2. The odd parity bit is
1 − (n mod 2).
For example, 10110010 contains four ones. Its even
parity bit is 0, because the number of ones is already
even. Its odd parity bit is 1, which changes the total
to five.
When Is a Byte Parity Generator Useful?
- Digital electronics: understand parity-generation logic and XOR circuits.
- Serial communication: explore parity conventions used by communication interfaces.
- Computer science education: practise binary representation and error detection.
- Data experiments: compare the parity bit for different byte patterns.
Parity is a lightweight error-detection technique, not a replacement for stronger error-detection or error-correction methods when those are required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a byte parity bit?
A parity bit is an additional bit used to make the total number of ones in a data byte plus its parity bit either even or odd. The sender and receiver must use the same parity convention.
What is the difference between even and odd parity?
Even parity requires an even total number of ones in the protected word. Odd parity requires an odd total. For the same input data, the two generated parity bits are opposites.
Does the parity bit become part of the original byte?
The original data remains eight bits. The parity bit is an additional bit, so the protected result is typically nine bits long. This tool lets you place that bit at either end for learning and experimentation.
Can parity detect every error?
No. A parity check detects any odd number of bit flips, but an even number of flipped bits can leave the expected parity unchanged. Parity does not locate or repair corrupted data.
Can I enter decimal or hexadecimal bytes?
Yes. Select decimal for values from 0 to 255 or hexadecimal for values from 00 to FF. The tool converts each value into an eight-bit binary representation before generating parity.
